Per chi le combatteva le streghe erano un vasto movimento politico, una società organizzata antisociale e anarchica, un complotto contro la civiltà. Per alcuni autori degli anni venti, questa cospirazione contro la civiltà è sopravvissuta fino ai giorni nostri e ribattezzata bolscevismo.
E adesso calma con i pregiudizi, la sprezzante superiorità rispetto al passato ci ha già indotto in parecchi errori. Si prendeva in giro il flogisto, le “potenze dormienti”, la teoria geocentrica... Erano tutte ipotesi effettivamente false, ma storici più sobri hanno spiegato perché ognuna aveva un senso tutt'altro che banale. Sostituiamo la nostra caricatura di assurda irrazionalità con un'immagine di persone intelligenti che fanno del loro meglio in situazioni epistemicamente insidiose.
