HL Fifty shades of nothing Edward Feser+ FACE

CREARE DAL NULLA
Facile dirlo, difficile farlo.

This compelling study of the origins of all that exists, including explanations of the entire material world, traces the responses of philosophers and scientists to the most elemental and haunting question of all: why is anything here―or anything anywhere? Why is there something rather than nothi....

Parte introduttiva
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 2
Fifty shades of nothing By Edward Feser
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 10
trying to show how quantum mechanics explains how the universe could arise from nothing.
Nota - Posizione 11
Hawking Krauss. Pop science
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 18
John Leslie and Robert Lawrence Kuhn
Nota - Posizione 18
Antologia
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 27
We are to imagine, first, space and time devoid of any visible objects but containing particles and energy; then space and time devoid of particles, but containing energy; then space and time devoid of that as well; and so forth until we arrive at the notion of there being absolutely nothing whatsoever, not even possibilities, mathematical truths, laws of nature, or abstract objects of any sort.
Nota - Posizione 30
La scala dei nulla
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 31
Physics isn’t everything
Nota - Posizione 31
Tttttttt
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 37
described a scenario in which not even space-time or mass-energy exist but the laws of quantum mechanics do -- he calls this “the physicists’ Nothing,”
Nota - Posizione 38
Cio che hanno in mente K e H
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 40
The Nothing of physicists is thick with the complete set of the laws of physics, and so between the physicists’ Nothing and Real Nothing lies a vast,
Nota - Posizione 41
Bacchettata a H e K
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 42
Kuhn does not regard the fundamental laws of physics, whatever they turn out to be, as a plausible terminus of explanation.
Nota - Posizione 42
Di conseguenza
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 44
I doubt I could ever get over the odd idea that something so intricate, so involved, so organized and so accessible as the laws of physics would be the ultimate brute fact.
Nota - Posizione 45
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 46
physicists themselves, including Krauss and Hawking, do not treat the laws of physics as if they were either logically necessary or a brute fact.
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 49
If they can in principle be falsified, then they are not necessary.
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 58
More than zero
Nota - Posizione 58
Tttttttttttt
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 59
to propose a philosophically interesting conception of a kind of “nothing” which is something less than what he calls “absolute” nothing or “Real Nothing.”
Nota - Posizione 60
Quel che cerca di fare Kuhn
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 62
we reach a point where there are no concrete objects in existence, but where there are still abstract objects.
Nota - Posizione 63
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 64
there are still universals, numbers, propositions,
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 67
In this scenario, since there would (in a sense) be no things, we would (in a sense) have “nothing,” but it would not be nothing in an absolute sense, since there would still be truths, properties, etc.
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 69
there are no abstract objects like numbers, universals, or the like, but there are still possibilities.
Nota - Posizione 69
K va oltre
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 70
This would be the “level 8” kind of “nothing.” Level 9 -- absolute nothing or Real Nothing -- would be reached when we delete even possibilities.
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 78
even Kuhn’s “no concrete objects, only abstract ones” scenario is explanatorily problematic. For abstract objects are typically regarded as causally inert. Hence if we need abstract objects in order to explain the realm of concrete things, we would also need at least one concrete thing in order to explain the others.
Nota - Posizione 81
Problemi con lo scenario di K. Livello 8
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 94
The classical perspective
Nota - Posizione 94
Ttttttttttt
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 96
The only remaining question is which brand. Pantheism? Panentheism? The classical theism of Augustine, Anselm, Avicenna, Maimonides, and Aquinas? The “theistic personalism” or “neo-theism” of contemporary philosophers of religion like Alvin Plantinga and Richard Swinburne?
Nota - Posizione 98
Una volta accettato il nulla 9
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 104
God as conceived of by theistic personalists simply cannot plausibly be regarded as an ultimate explanation of the world.
Nota - Posizione 104
Tesi
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 105
a member of the class of “persons,”
Nota - Posizione 105
Per i personalisti
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 106
the doctrine of divine simplicity.
Nota - Posizione 106
Negata
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 106
even attribute change to God.
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 107
whatever is in any way composed of parts requires an explanation of its composition;
Nota - Posizione 108
Il problema
Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 109
and whatever changes in any way requires a cause of change.
Nota - Posizione 110

Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 110

Evidenzia (giallo) - Posizione 123

http://www.bigquestionsonline.com/columns/michael-shermer/the-biggest-big-question-of-all
