Le donne apprezzano più degli uomini il tempo libero e la flessibilità; prendono più permessi per motivi di salute propria o dei familiari. Donne e uomini pianificano di fare straordinari simili quando sono programmati con tre mesi in anticipo ma alla fine gli straordinari effettivi degli uomini sono il 50% in più. Se confrontiamo donne con carichi familiari e uomini nella medesima condizione le tendenze di cui sopra si allargano. Quando selezionano gli orari di lavoro, le donne cercano di evitare i fine settimana, le vacanze e hanno più esigenze sui turni. Tendono ad evitare orari sfavorevoli e percorsi problematici. Sono anche meno propense ad aggirare il sistema facendo figurare gli orari ordinari come straordinario.
