GLI ZINGARI
Lasciarono il nord dell’India un migliaio di anni fa. Irruppero presto in Europa dicendo di provenire dal basso Egitto e di essere in pellegrinaggio per espiare l’abbandono dei cristianesimo da parte dei loro antenati. Furono asserviti in Romania e, nell’ 800, quando la servitù fu abolita, si diffusero più capillarmente sul continente.
Per gli zingari esistono solo i rom e i non-rom (gaje): non hanno un termine per designare l’uomo in generale.
Il gaje, poi, nemmeno è un vero uomo, è più che altro un elemento della natura. Esempio: truffe e furti a scapito di un compagno rom sono offese mortali, ai danni di un gaje sono condannabili solo nella misura in cui creano problemi al popolo Rom.
Il Gaje nemmeno è un soggetto giuridicamente responsabile. Leggevo di un gruppo rom che, prima di levare le tende, recò offesa ai locali con una sequela di furti; i locali risposero punendo un secondo gruppo di rom da poco arrivato nello stesso campo. La risposta degli aggrediti fu quella di chiedere un risarcimento ai rom responsabili dei furti, non agli abitanti del posto che li avevano vessati. Così come non hanno il diritto alla loro proprietà, i Gaje nemmeno sono colpevoli per i loro atti di violenza: sono solo un elemento del paesaggio naturale che gli zingari attraversano nella loro avventura nomade.

In genere noi odiamo gli zingari, e ne abbiamo molte ragioni. Ma ci sono anche ragioni per ammirarli. Mi piace quel fastidio verso le schedature: agli zingari non piace essere controllati, specie dai gaje, sono un popolo libero. In questo senso le loro strategie di difesa sono ingegnose; per esempio, usano il nome in modo fungibile, ovvero lo cambiano e se lo scambiano regolarmente. Un rom con la carta d’identità si sente praticamente in prigione. Questa capacità di sfuggire alle maglie della burocrazia spiega molte cose. Per esempio, i nazisti presero di mira sia i rom che gli ebrei, nel primo caso sappiamo come è andata, nel secondo sembra che abbiano avuto molto meno successo, più dei 2/3 dei rom si salvarono senza troppo penare.

Lo zingaro insudiciato

Sul treno spesso incrocio gli Zingari. Non parlano mai con nessuno se non tra loro, evitano i gajé come la peste. Sono sempre in movimento e scorrono via nei corridoi in rapide e silenti file indiane: per loro esistono solo i loro simili, eccezion fatta giusto per il controllore dal quale rifuggono incessantemente.

Questi personaggi mi hanno incuriosito e ho cercato di informarmi, ora vi rendo partecipi di quel che ho scoperto.

E' gente originaria dell' India, è in giro da migliaia di anni e una simile resistenza del ceppo non è facile da spiegare: non possono contare su un governo che applichi ai loro casi le leggi più elementari visto che sono impegnati quasi sempre in attività considerate illegali dai governi in carica. Non possono contare nemmeno su forme efficienti di ostracismo dei reietti visto che le tante comunità zingare sono sempre in movimento e tra loro in contatto precario, il che non consente un’ applicazione efficiente dell’ istituto.
Come regolano dunque la vita sociale? Qual è il segreto del loro successo?
La mia impressione è che sopravvivano grazie al fatto di aver respinto ogni forma di laicità.
Ma andiamo per gradi e cominciamo a capire di cosa campa uno zingaro. In cosa consiste la sua vita mondana?
Svolgono un' unica attività - la predizione del futuro - oggi però molto in crisi, cosicché hanno virato il loro core business sull' elemosina. All' apparenza non sono molto alacri e questo perché colludono: l' autorità del campo suddivide in comparti la città evitando ogni forma di concorrenza.
Di solito noi li consideriamo ladri ma il ladrocinio non è una pratica canonica. Piuttosto, sono oggetto di ammirazione gli zingari che riescono a frodare il loro cliente nel corso dell' elemosina o della lettura della mano, così come brilla la reputazione di chi froda i programmi di welfare. La dedizione al furto più genuino discende forse da queste inquietanti premesse e, nonostante tutto, è giudicata una degenerazione anche presso i gitani.
Nel campo la criminalità è bassa: gli zingari non rubano tra loro e, anzi, sono piuttosto ligi nell' osservanza delle regole, fenomeno sorprendente visto che nel campo non esiste una polizia o roba del genere e visto anche l' ammonimento di voci autorevoli per cui homo hominis lupus...
Così com' è illegale la loro attività economica, sono illegali anche molte attività civili: le mogli si comprano e spesso ci si sposa ad età in cui da noi nemmeno è possibile esprimere un consenso. Cosicché quando ci si lascia non si puo' certo andare in tribunale per far valere i propri diritti, bisogna arrangiarsi attraverso altri canali.
Lo zingaro tipo vive dunque immerso nell' illegalità ma illegalità non significa mancanza di leggi: come potrebbe mai coniugarsi la mancanza di leggi con un simile successo evolutivo della razza? Dove sta il trucco?

 

Lo zingaro crede nella magia.

In particolare è ossessionato dalla purezza. La sua spiritualità molto spiccata lo porta a vedere pulizia e/o sudiciume ovunque. Ogni fenomeno deve passare il vaglio di questa polarità.

Il corpo umano sotto la cintola - laddove produce escrementi, urine e mestrui - è ricettacolo di impurità, specie quello delle donne. Da cio' discendono una miriade di precetti tesi a preservare la purezza della persona.

Mi limito a qualche esempo.

Le gonne della zingara sono indumenti impuri, anche per questo nel corso di una lite familiare "lei" non vi attaccherà mai con calci e pugni bensì brandendo la propria gonna. E' anche un tipico modo con cui le donne fanno cessare le risse nel campo.
Con la gonna non si cucina, bisogna indossare il grembiule. La donna coi mestrui, poi, non cucinerà mai e mangerà appartata distruggendo piatti e posate (di solito finiscono nel Bozzente). L’ esposizione alle parti basse del prossimo va evitata con cura: guai a chi segue dappresso qualcuno su una scala, specie se donna, pena la contaminazione.
Sesso anale e orale sono banditi e le nudità sono tabù. La donna, tanto per dire, deve svegliarsi con congruo anticipo sull' uomo in modo da non farsi vedere allorché esce dal letto e si prepara. In ogni caso, a meno che non sia completamente vestita, deve mostrarsi sempre di schiena camminando come i granchi. I vestiti di lei non potranno mai essere lavati con quelli di lui, in caso di errore si butta tutto. Uno zingaro evita persino di sbadigliare pur di non evocare il letto, luogo impuro quant' altri mai. E non sentirete mai uno zingaro dire che si assenta per recarsi alla toilette: certe parole sono tabù.
Per le mani il discorso si fa complesso vista la loro continua spola tra parti basse e parti alte del corpo. Il lavacro è importante per decontaminarle almeno una volta al giorno: non deve mai avvenire in contenitori dediti ad altri usi.
Cani e gatti sono infetti poiché dediti all' orribile leccaggio dei genitali ma il più infetto d tutti è il non-zingaro. Io, per esempio. Se invitato nel loro campo mi assegneranno uno sgabello opportunamente ricoperto da uno spesso preservativo, non si sa mai. In ogni caso non sperate di entrare nella loro dimora, i timori di contagio sarebbero troppi.
Gli zingari credono dunque nella magia, non solo, della magia bisogna tener conto in ogni piccolo atto quotidiano. La loro magia è ipertrofica. Una vita d' inferno per chi non dovesse condividere questa fede. Considerando che l' adesione alla tribù è completamente volontaria, capiamo bene perché la fede nella magia sia solida e pervasiva tra i membri della comunità: ogni individuo è immerso in questo mondo fin da piccolo e
sviluppa in questo senso un capitale umano e sociale notevole.
A questo punto il gioco è fatto, basta equiparare i crimini mondani ai peccati d' impurità. Chi uccide uno zingaro è dichiarato impuro, proprio come chi non si lava le mani o non fa tre inchini prima di entrare in casa. Lo stesso dicasi per chi ruba a uno zingaro.
Una punizione tremenda se hai passato la vita (tutti i santi giorni che il dio degli zingari manda in terra) a mantenerti puro trovando perfettamente sensato questo sforzo. Ma soprattutto una punizione che si auto esegue senza bisogno di polizia e corti d' appello.

A tutto cio' si aggiunge la credenza nel contagio: l' impuro puo' contagiare il puro. E' grazie al contagio che l'ostracismo torna ad essere efficiente anche presso le disarticolate tribù degli zingari, esiste infatti un incentivo notevole a informarsi sui nuovi venuti. Ora poi che hanno il telefonino...

Inutile dire che rifarsi una vita nella comunità gajé è precluso: la quintessenza del sudiciume si accumula proprio lì.

Funziona? Che la cosa funzioni lo constatiamo dallo splendido effetto deterrente che abbiamo sotto gli occhi, nonché dai successi che hanno consentito a questa popolazione ovunque perseguitata di giungere incolume fino a noi.
