SCONTI O BONUS?
Vuoi svendere? Affidati ai bonus (tipo il 3x2), funzionano meglio dei saldi.
Perché? Forse perché i clienti hanno problemi con le percentuali.
Finché si ragiona sui numeri assoluti tutto è facile: 50 è maggiore di 33, non ci piove. Ma con le percentuali è diverso: 50% puo’ essere minore o uguale a 33%!
Esempio: ammettiamo che un fustino costi 50 euro: un 3x2 comporta un bonus del 50% (tre fustini costano 100 euro anziché 150). Se lavoro con i saldi l’equivalente è uno sconto del 33% (in questo modo chi acquista 3 fustini spende sempre 100 euro).
Domanda: preferisci un bonus del 50% o uno sconto del 33%? Le due cose, lo abbiamo appena visto sono equivalenti. Ma il cliente…

I misteri del supermercato

Il miglior modo per imparare l’economia – quella vera, non quella sui piani cartesiani - è andare al supermercato, la miglior guida ai supermercati è il Tim Harford di “What Supermarkets Don’t Want You to Know”.
Di solito la scarsità di qualcosa ne aumenta il valore: per questo Michael Jordan è miliardario.
Per questo il sontuoso bar di fronte alla Victoria Station di Londra sforna a ritmo frenetico un numero spropositato di colazioni nell’unità di tempi… senza fare molti soldi (è il proprietario delle mura ad arricchirsi poiché la capacità di preparare colazioni non è “scarsa” mentre la felice posizione del locale sì).
Ma la scarsità non è tutto

Fuori da casi eccezionali, ogni commerciante si trova di fronte al classico dilemma economico: meglio raddoppiare i prezzi o le quantità vendute?
Una soluzione ottima esiste: chi fa cappuccini potrebbe esporre questo cartello:
… “‘Cappuccino, £5, unless you’re only willing to pay 5.5”…
Un tariffario del genere massimizza i guadagni del bar ed è il sogno di ogni negoziante.
Ha solo un inconveniente: non esiste nessun cliente al mondo che confesserà mai di essere disposto a pagare di più.
Non è un inconveniente gravissimo: ci sono strategie furbe che ci fanno “confessare”.
I maestri di queste strategie sono i supermercati, per questo vanno messi sotto la lente.
Di fronte ad ogni prodotto ci sarà chi è disposto a spendere 1 e chi è disposto a spendere 10: l’ arte di discernere i due soggetti fa prosperare il commercio. Non è facile vista la convenenza del cliente a simulare.
Bisogna ricorrere alle cosiddette politiche di “discriminazione del prezzo”.
Il 95% delle strane e complicate offerte in cui ci si imbatte al supermercato non sono altro che politiche di “discriminazione del prezzo”.
Servono ad estorcervi una confessione.
Il commercio equo-solidale è un ottimo modo per discriminare la clientela. Facciamo il caso della Costa Coffee…

Il supplemento di 10p dà l’impressione di essere dovuto al “fair trade” ma non è così…

Il supermercato vi dà la possibilità di “esprimervi”, in cambio voi “confessate” che siete disposti a pagare un po’ di più un kg di caffé.
Vi stanno fregando? No!: il caffé al solito prezzo è sul bancone a fianco.
Inoltre, una fetta del suo guadagno la Costa lo gira al produttore.
Moltiplicare le scelte  disponibili ha la stessa funzione…

Ci sono almeno tre strategie per capire chi sono i consumatori disposti a pagare di più.
La prima consiste nel guardarvi in faccia e capire chi siete…

Un’altra strategia consiste nel distinguere il cliente dallo status che segnala: turista, locale, lavoratore…

E’ chiaro che il turista paga qualsiasi prezzo: mica puo’ girare per far confronti. I lavoratori in loco invece battono la zona in cerca del meglio visto che a loro le occasioni di sperimentare non mancano: meglio per chi li tratta bene.
I caffé in piazza San Marco hanno prezzi esosi anche se i turisti che transitano da quelle parti sono per lo più della classe media. I bar di fronte alla borsa hanno prezzi normalissimi anche se frequentati da miliardari…

La terza strategia consiste nel differenziare leggermente il prodotto

La leggera differenza nei prodotti non fa capire se il supermercato fa rice-targeting (vi sta facendo “confessare”) o vi sta addebitando un costo reale. In genere siamo nel primo caso, anche se spesso c’è un mix delle due cose.
Al momento il “bio” fa fare molti affari (al supermercato)…

I maniaci dei supermercati, quelli che li battono palmo a palmo in tutta la città (tipo Tim Harford) sanno bene che è difficile trovare prodotti uguali a prezzi diversi. Non fidatevi di chi proclama la “convenienza” delle Coop o la qualità di Esselunga.
Una cosa di cui non si tiene conto nel fare questi confronti è la localizzazione del supermercato: quanti km siete disposti a fare per risparmiare 1 euro?
Alcuni supermercati sembrano più economici perché – conoscendo la loro clientela - mettono in vista i prodotti più economici (o detengono solo quelli)…

Al supermercato gli sconti sono onnipresenti. Bisogna rendersi conto che il modo migliore per alzare i prezzi di un prodotto consiste nel dire che gli altri sono scontati.
La qualità di un supermercato deriva solo dal fatto che punta a clienti che apprezzano la qualità e mette più enfasi su questo aspetto. Altri sottolineeranno altro, ma tutto si trova ovunque. Sapendo questo il consiglio che ne esce è ovvio…

La discriminazione del prezzo spiega praticamente tutto quel che accade nel supermercato e quasi tutto quel che accade nei commerci in generale…

A volte la qualità è abbassata dal produttore con intenti che non sono affatto quelli di risparmiare sui costi. Perché lo fa allora?
Discriminazione di prezzo, ovviamente. Non è sempre facile spingere chi potrebbe pagare di più a farlo, e far abbassare l’appeal dell’alternativa è un modo efficace. Ci sono esempi storici nei trasporti di prima e seconda classe…

Le sale d’aspetto scadenti di certi aeroporti potrebbero essere un esempio.
Il supermercato non è da meno: l’imballaggio di certi prodotti sembra urlare “faccio schifo!… non comprarmi!”. In altri casi il design è repellente e non costerebbe certo di più migliorarlo.
Questo è anche il motivo per cui ordinare un normalissimo cappuccino da Starbucks puo’ diventare un’impresa…

Anche i ricchi potrebbero bere il loro eccellente (ed economico) cappuccino, e questo è un pericolo: vanno depistati.
Ma discriminare i clienti puo’ essere pericoloso: chi paga meno potrebbe rivendere a chi paga di più tagliando fuori il negoziante. Capita con le medicine, i dischi e i prodotti digitali. In questo modo anche i consumatori più pigri ricevono un premio a discapito del negoziante.
Si corre ai ripari in qualche modo…

In genere la discriminazione di prezzo è un bene. Ecco un esempio:

Assume that it doesn’t engage in any price-targeting and charges the same price across the globe… that looks like bad news. PillCorp is using its scarcity power to charge a high price for a life-saving drug. As a result, people in poor countries don’t get the drug… PillCorp could be making more money and serving the world better.... a taxi driver in Cameroon might be willing to pay only $50 a year for treatment;l... Because of PillCorp’s global price policy, the taxi driver loses out on the treatment, and PillCorp loses out on the chance to make some profit. But if PillCorp were able to make a onetime discount to the taxi driver ... That is what economists mean when we say a situation ‘could be better’
Quanti più affari fa “Big Pharma”, tanto meglio sta il mondo! E in questo la discriminazione di prezzo aiuta.
E lo stesso, naturalmente, dicasi per i supermercati.
Ma facciamo un altro esempio che ha la virtù d’instillare qualche dubbio…
… consider another hypothetical organisation, TrainCorp, a passenger train company. TrainCorp owns a train that always travels full. Some of the seats go at a discount of £50 to leisure travellers who booked in advance, to senior citizens, to students or to families. The other tickets cost the full price of £100… We know at once – if we are economists – that this is inefficient. In other words, we can think of something that would make at least one person better off without making anyone else worse off. That something is to find a commuter who was willing to pay a little less than £100, say £95, and who decided to travel by car instead, and offer him a seat for £90. Where does the seat come from, since the train is full? Well, you take a student who is in no great hurry and was willing to pay a little more than £50, say £55, for the seat and politely throw him off the train. .... But of course, that’s not what happens, because if TrainCorp tried it, commuters who were willing to pay £100 would hang around for the £90 tickets… summary: the group price-targeting strategy is inefficient because it takes seats away from customers who are willing to pay more, and gives them to customers who are willing to pay less. .......individual price-targeting isn’t feasible…
Si noti però che in casi del genere  l’inefficienza deriva dalla discriminazione di prezzo per gruppi. Detto in altri termini: la discriminazione è troppo poca, andrebbe raffinata ulteriormente.
Perché certi libri escono prima nella versione più costosa con la copertina rigida e poi in formato tascabile? Per discriminare i clienti impazienti (e disposti a pagare di più dagli altri). La discriminazione spiega tutto, come al solito.
La discriminazione produce sia del bene (anche i più poveri potranno leggere il libro) e del male (l’appassionato è spremuto come un limone).
Se i supermercati potessero leggere nella vostra mente (ovvero potessero praticare una discriminazione perfetta) il mondo sarebbe un posto migliore?
Lascio in sospeso la risposta, avremo modo di riparlarne.

  • Businesses with scarcity power cannot force us to pay unlimited prices for their products, but they can choose from a variety of strategies to make us pay more. ... .
  • They could simply double the price of a cappuccino. Some people would pay the new price, but many would not.
  • Alternatively, they could cut prices and sell much more coffee.
  • That’s the dilemma: higher margins per cup, but fewer cups; or lower margins on more cups....by charging 60p to people who are not willing to pay more and £5 to people who are willing to pay a lot to enjoy the coffee and the view.
  • How to do it, though? Have a price list saying, ‘Cappuccino, £5, unless you’re only willing to pay 60p’?... coffee bars have to be more subtle.
  • Costa Coffee, who in the early 2000s used to have an elegant strategy: Costa offered ‘Fair Trade’ coffee to anyone willing to pay an extra 10p.
  • Charging an extra 10p gave the impression that that was the cost of the fair trade coffee, but a customer who reached that conclusion would have been wrong.
  • But why was it profitable to charge a higher mark-up on the cost of production on fair trade coffee than on normal coffee? ... The reason has nothing to do with fair trade at all: it’s because fair trade coffee allowed Costa to find customers who are willing to pay a bit more if given a reason to do so. By ordering a fair trade cappuccino, you sent two messages to Costa. One message may or may not have interested them:..‘I think that fair trade coffee is a product that should be supported.’ The second message is the one that they were straining to hear: ‘I don’t really mind paying a bit extra.’

  • Because the products are different, you never quite know whether the firm is using a price-targeting trick or merely passing on added costs. ... If it looks like price-targeting, it probably is.
  • How far would you walk to save 30p?
  • It was harder to find examples of identical products selling for different prices, although by no means impossible. Does this mean that Sainsbury’s doesn’t price-target as much as M&S? Not at all.
  • It wasn’t that these products were more expensive in Tottenham Court Road than in Dalston (only the Vittel was), it was just that in Dalston cheaper substitutes sprang into view far more readily.

  • It’s also good business to offer discounts to the elderly and to students (translation: charge higher prices to people likely to have jobs).

  • My recommendation, if you are convinced of the merits of organic food, is not to let food retailers exploit your enthusiasm: vote with your wallet by supporting any retailer – or direct supplier – who brings the price of organic and non-organic food closer together.
  • Bargain shopping and bargain stores
  • Wholefoods ...On hearing this, people would comment on how wonderful the store is... But my acquaintances also complain about how expensive Wholefoods is. But … is it really expensive?
  • Safeway just five blocks away, a store known to the locals as ‘Soviet Safeway’ because of the small range of products and the harsh decor.
  • when you compare the prices for the same goods, Wholefoods is just as inexpensive as Safeway.
  • That doesn’t quite fit with our common-sense belief that some places are cheap and some places are expensive. But that belief never made much sense.
  • Wholefoods is more fun to shop in... Wholefoods is not expensive in the sense that it charges more for the same goods. It is expensive because of where its price-targeting policies are focused: prices for the basics may be competitive, but the selection in Wholefoods is aimed at customers with a different view of what ‘basics’ are.
  • So here’s my advice: if you want a bargain, don’t try to find a cheap store. Try to shop cheaply. Similar products are, very often, priced similarly. An expensive shopping trip is the result of carelessly choosing

Some of the most extreme examples come from the travel industry: travelling first class by train or air is much more expensive than buying a standard ticket, but since the fundamental effect is to get people from A to B, it may be hard to wring much money out of the wealthier passengers.

L' abbiamo voluto noi

Una recente inchiesta giornalistica sull’economia di Brescia e sulla sua “reinvenzione” dopo la crisi della centralità siderurgica... ha messo in evidenza come uno dei fattori di forza di questa provincia lombarda sia la massiccia presenza di supermercati, centri commerciali, mega-store e via dicendo. Non si tratta soltanto di realtà che creano posti di lavoro, ma soprattutto di strutture che contribuiscono a mantenere più bassi i prezzi e, di conseguenza, a proteggere il potere d’acquisto. Ora leggiamo che uno dei primi atti della giunta piemontese guidata dal leghista Roberto Cota consiste proprio nel bloccare l’apertura di alcuni supermercati. L’assessore competente, William Casoni (Pdl), ha giustificato la cosa affermando che si deve evitare “un’eccessiva concorrenza” e soprattutto che si devono proteggere quei piccoli negozi che perderebbero clienti, se questi ultimi potessero comprare altrove e più a buon mercato. Qualcuno rileva che andare dal negoziante e pagare di più può essere vantaggioso: perché i soldi "restano in zona", perché i centri commerciali sono tristi, perché i negozianti svolgono anche una funzione sociale. Ok. Io non ho assolutamente nulla contro chi vuole andare dal negozietto che vende i pomodori a 5 euro al chilo. Ha un suo mercato e quindi è più che legittimato a esistere, il suo profitto è rispettabile ma ad una condizione: che l’accesso al mercato sia libero. Altrimenti quel negoziante non è un imprenditore (che rischia e si mette al servizio del cliente), ma è un parassita (che si avvantaggia di protezioni legali). Nessuno dovrebbe essere aiutato, per una ragione etica (non mettere le mani in tasca agli altri) e anche per una ragione economica. Perché quando un’attività, grande o piccola che sia, chiude i battenti, a decidere tutto questo non è stato il fato e neppure una qualche strana cospirazione. Siamo stati noi che l' abbiamo voluto...
