PERCHE’ GLI ACCADEMICI ODIANO IL MERCATO?

Chi è destinato alla docenza è stato quasi sempre uno studente brillante, uno dei migliori nella sua classe. Simili rendimenti generano grandi aspettative economiche per il futuro. Eppure i mercati tengono conto in modo molto relativo del profitto scolastico. Questo disallineamento tra scuola e lavoro, con la conseguente relativa caduta di status del “secchione” è percepito dagli interessati - e probabilmente dagli intellettuali in generale - come moralmente inaccettabile.

Finalmente qualche numero a sostegno di questa vecchia teoria.

Lo “squallido” Burioni

Ricercatori del CERN scoprono il Burione, la particella al cui passaggio le altre si fanno da parte intimorite. “Inizialmente pensavamo di intrappolare il Burione grazie a un potentissimo campo magnetico”, raccontano gli autori della straordinaria scoperta, “invece è bastato farlo parlare delle sue ex. Per quanto ne sappiamo, è ancora lì.”

Questo post non è una difesa di Burioni, è piuttosto un tentativo di capirlo e giustificare il suo squallore, così simile al nostro. Il passo essenziale consiste nel non associarlo alla Scienza ma agli scienziati.

La scienza è il nostro sapere più affidabile, tuttavia Il novecento ha portato alla luce almeno un paio di limiti:

1) la logica che adotta (induttiva) è inaffidabile. Rischia sempre di farle fare la fine del tacchino che per 364 giorni all’anno riceve un pasto mentre il 365 esimo, ovvero Natale, quando si presenta dal contadino per mangiare scopre di essere lui il pasto del contadino.

2) Il  suo metodo sperimentale è illusorio, puo’ verificare solo ipotesi prese in gruppo. Ovvero: quando crede di verificare una corrispondenza sta in realtà verificando una coerenza.

Morale: l’impresa scientifica non può dirsi né razionale, né sperimentale. Chi è in cerca di certezze per alimentare la sua tracotanza si affidi al senso comune, non alla scienza.

I limiti di cui sopra producono almeno tre conseguenze: 1) innanzitutto, la scienza non si eleva mai oltre lo stato di credenza; 2) la scienza è una discussione infinita tenuta ad includere più partecipanti (e più esperimenti) possibili; 3) per avere le idee chiare di cosa sia meglio guardare alla sua storia e alla sua sociologia più che la sua metodologia.

Le tre conseguenze sono sintetizzabili in una parola: umiltà!

Se questo è vero, la divulgazione scientifica è tenuta ad esorcizzare due demoni su tutti: positivismo e relativismo.

Fortunatamente, la scienza è un’impresa collettiva, cosicché il suo spirito più autentico – aperto, tollerante, inclusivo – non deve necessariamente coincidere con quello degli scienziati, spesso così inclini alla testardaggine, all’intolleranza e alla sicumera. A cominciare dall’esimio Galileo: come mostrato da Paul Feyerabend, nel confronto con il suo inquisitore, San Bellarmino, è quest’ultimo – aperto, tollerante e ben disposto all’ascolto – ad incarnare al meglio lo spirito della scienza.

Sembra un paradosso ma si tratta di un corto circuito che ricorre anche altrove, pensate solo al  rapporto tra  mercato e imprenditore: il primo aperto, flessibile e proteso verso concorrenza, il secondo animato da fede incrollabile mentre sogna profitti monopolistici.

Tutta questa pappardella per spiegare il mio contenuto stupore di fronte agli spettacolini “squallidi” che certi rappresentanti della scienza come Burioni offrono a getto continuo sui social.

Cosi come Briatore è un ottimo imprenditore che con la sua tracotante avidità non giova all’immagine del libero mercato, Burioni è un buon medico che con la sua boria divulga più il suo spirito anti-scientifico che altro.

Grazie alle continue scoperte scientifiche e alla loro applicazione tecnologica la nostra civiltà ci garantisce un benessere materiale mille volte superiore a quello del passato.

Sembra farsi largo un dubbio: la marcia del progresso è destinata a finire? Avremo sempre meno idee brillanti?

A quanto pare siamo in fase calante. O meglio, il ritmo delle scoperte scientifiche non rallenta granché ma cresce a livello esponenziale il numero di persone che vi si dedica.

A cosa imputare il crollo della produttività scientifica? Le spiegazioni sono molte, la mia preferita è questa: tempo fa abbiamo scoperto “l’albero della scienza” e lo abbiamo saccheggiato. O meglio, abbiamo colto tutti i “frutti sui rami bassi”. Ce ne sono altri, per carità, ma sempre più difficili da raggiungere.

Pensate allo sport. Pensate alla maratona. Pensate ai record della maratona. I record vengono regolarmente aggiornati ma questi miglioramenti non riflettono affatto il numero crescente di persone che si dedicano alla disciplina! Ecco, lo stesso accade alla scienza.

Forse l’intelligenza artificiale cambierà le cose. Fra 30 anni saranno i robot a fare ricerca (il mestiere di scienziato non ha futuro) e chissà che non assisteremo ad una ripresa della produttività precedente.

Si fa un gran parlare di globalizzazione, tecnologia, immigrazione. E poi ci si dimentica il fattore chiave: l’estinzione di Cenerentola.

In passato non era così, capitava molto spesso che un principe sposasse Cenerentola. Capitava molto spesso che un super-mega-manager sposasse una paesana: la moglie doveva badare alla casa e ai figli e ci sono molte paesane (bellissime) perfettamente competenti in materia. Una ragazza della provincia più profonda (con la saggezza della provincia più profonda) puo’ essere una splendida first lady.

Oggi il super-mega-manager preferisce sposare la super-mega-manager e passare insieme a lei magnifiche seratine parlando dei problemi di cash flow aziendale nel corso del quantitive easing delle banche centrali. Un argomento che inibisce Cenerentola ma non certo la nuova consorte.

La coppia tipo da tenere a mente: il super-mega-Nobel George Akerlof e la presidentessa della FED Janet Yellen. Mi sembra evidente che lui non ha scelto lei per badare a casa/figli (e nemmeno viceversa). Sono nati in Cina i primi due bambini “geneticamente modificati”. Il genetista He Jiankui, dell’università di Scienza e tecnologia di Shenzhen, ha modificato il Dna di Lulu e Nana contecnologia Crispr/Cas9 per renderli immuni all’Hiv.

Le reazioni sono state per lo più negative, si teme una deriva eugenetica.

Ma la parola “eugenetica” sembra fatta apposta per non discutere del problema. Il primo passo è distinguerne tra due "eugenetiche":

1) Eugenetica comunitaria. Alcune persone decidono come devono essere i figli degli altri a tutela del bene comune.

2) Eugenetica individuale. Alcune persone cercano di migliorare la qualità dei loro figli.

La prima mi sembra sempre condannabile, la seconda molto meno. Direi che la seconda si realizza già tutte le volte che qualcuno, nella scelta di chi sposare, considera anche i figli che avrà con lui.

La religione ambientalista è pericolosa poiché prende a pretesto un problema reale cosicché i precetti della sua fede inquinano una discussione seria. Si pone allora il problema di come distinguere ed emarginare i “preti verdi”?
Di seguito offro un criterio. Comincio col dire che quando si parla di ambiente e riscaldamento globale le questioni sul tavolo sono almeno quattro:
SE la Terra si sta riscaldando.
SE l’attività umana contribuisca al riscaldamento.
QUANTO l’attività umana contribuisce al riscaldamento.
QUALI sono i benefici (e i costi) che derivano dal riscaldamento.
COME affrontare il problema.

Ebbene, il “prete verde” parla seriamente solo dei “SE”. Sul resto o è silente o impiega slogan e formule prefabbricate.

Lo scientismo è quella posizione che oppone la SCIENZA al DOGMA.

In realtà le due cose sono in relazione di sequela più che di opposizione. La SCIENZA ci mette a disposizione un “mezzo”, il DOGMA un “fine”. La SCIENZA puo’ essere usata bene o male, il DOGMA distingue bene e male. SCIENZA e DOGMA collaborano alla medesima impresa, non si oppongono.

Lo scientista pensa che la scienza ci indichi anche la direzione del bene. 

Al di là di ogni giudizio, ho sempre avuto la sensazione che lo scientista sia una sorta di “parassita”: sfrutta la buona fama della scienza per accreditare la sua morale discutibile.

Socialisti scientifici, tecnocrati, psicologi sociali, progressisti, ambientalisti… ecco i Mullah e gli Zeloti del nostro tempo. Il velo che utilizzano per occultarsi è lo scientismo.
