Il divorzio tra scienza e fede

Abbiamo visto che probabilmente esiste un Dio, che probabilmente coincide con il Dio cristiano e che, anche se parliamo di un Dio d’amore, la presenza del male sulla terra è giustificato. Un Dio del genere probabilmente ci starà vicino facendosi uomoallevierà la nostra condizione, ci indicherà un modello di perfezione conservandolo intatto nel tempo e rendendolo vivo. Ma l’uomo contemporaneo sarà in grado di intenderlo utilizzando la sua ragione?
A quanto pare le difficoltà non mancano.
Il divorzio fede/ragione si è consumato secoli fa patrocinato da spiriti illustri come Hume e Kant.
Oggi la frattura resta di fatto insanabile anche se gli argomenti originari si presentano a noi come vetusti, almeno secondo il Richard Swinburne di "Why Hume and Kant were mistaken in rejecting natural theology".
Ma cos'è esattamente la teologia naturale, ovvero la base razionale della fede?...

Non è indispensabile padroneggiarla per vivere a fondo la fede ma è uno strumento a disposizione del dubbioso. Oggi che viviamo tra i dubbi sarebbe doppiamente preziosa ma su quella tradizione è stato gettato un discredito che perdura...

Ma vediamo in concreto come Hume tratta, per esempio, il concetto di "causa"...

Noi costruiamo i concetti grazie alla logica induttiva, e la cosa è evidente nella costruzione del concetto di "causa".
È un concetto rilevante per la teologia naturale poichè Dio è causa dell'universo.
Ma Dio è unico e inosservabile. Se conosciamo attraverso l'induzione come sarà mai possibile conoscere l'esistenza di un Dio unico e inosservabile? Cosa ci vorrebbe secondo Hume?...

Il fatto è che nella filosofia di Hume tutto è unico e la conoscenza solo specifica. In questo senso non potremmo mai conoscere nulla: anche due atomi sono fondamentalmente diversi se considerati nello specifico: per assimilarli al fine di applicare l’induzione noi istituiamo necessariamente delle analogie...

Di fatto Hume ricorre all'analogia per costruire il concetto di causa poichè accomuna realtà che giudica analoghe (esempio due atomi distinti)...

A questo punto è bene aggiungere che noi sperimentiamo la causa anche in altro modo trascurato da Hume: osservando noi stessi.
Se alzo la mano so di aver causato io questo gesto, almeno fino a prova contraria (principio di credulità).

Ora è chiaro che se istituiamo un'analogia (operazione che a parole Hume non consente ma che di fatto fa per non ricadere nel nichilismo) tra uomo e Dio, noi possiamo elaborare poi su quest'ultimo concetto.
Magari l’analogia tra uomo e Dio non è fedele come quella tra due atomi ma poco conta: la cosa si riflette sulle probabilità non sulla possibilità di conoscere.

Molti errori di Hume sono stati ereditati da Kant, anche se in questo caso parliamo di un filosofo più sofisticato.
L'intelletto concepito da Kant è fatto di intuizioni e categorie, la conoscenza con una fonte interiore non è quindi negata...

Il sapere dell’uomo nasce dall'applicazione delle categorie interiori all’intuizione che ci forniscono le esperienze possibili.
Dio non rientra tra le “esperienze possibili”, quindi non possiamo farne oggetto di ragionamento applicando ad esso il concetto di causa.
Prima domanda: cosa sono le “esperienze possibili”, ovvero gli “oggetti logicamente possibili”?
Domanda lecita visto che l’esempio fatto da Kant stesso è palesemente errato. Parla infatti di spazio “spazio unico”…

Ha in mente lo spazio della geometria euclidea. Eppure i matematici hanno concepito come possibili e hanno ragionato a lungo su spazi non-euclidei. O si tratta di vaneggiamenti o Kant ha torto.
Ma aver sbagliato esempio non confuta di per sè la tesi gnoseologica di fondo. Vediamo una formulazione alternativa…

Poiché non possiamo esperire l’incondizionato, quindi non possiamo parlarne. Segue elenco delle antinomie.
E qui arriviamo alla sostanza: quando Kant dice che “non possiamo conoscere” afferma di fatto che non possiamo conoscere con certezza. Ma oggi noi sappiamo che tutta la conoscenza è probabilistica.
Elencando le antinomie della ragione pura si afferma che ad ogni tesi emerge un’antitesi plausibile. Vero, tuttavia è possibile attribuire probabilità diverse a tesi ed antitesi.
Il Big Bang è un evento che non osserveremo mai ma che possiamo ipotizzare in modo plausibile. Anche un universo infinito è un’ipotesi possibile ma date certe leggi che osserviamo nell’universo la prima ipotesi resta più probabile.
Non sappiamo cosa abbia causato il Big Bang, tuttavia possiamo conoscere la sua realtà dagli effetti che ha prodotto….

Kant sottovaluta il concetto di probabilità

Si tratta di un concetto che combinato con l’analogia ci consente di conoscere cio’ che non possiamo osservare.
Kant morì nel 1804, peccato. Peccato perché con la teoria atomica di Dalton anche la scienza cominciò a postulare enti inosservabili attribuendo loro certi effetti… .

Siccome Kant ammirava le scienze fisiche, questa loro evoluzione lo avrebbe portato a rivedere la sua filosofia della conoscenza. Una revisione che probabilmente avrebbe riabilitato la teologia naturale.

Abbiamo visto che probabilmente esiste un Dio, che probabilmente coincide con il Dio cristiano e che, anche se parliamo di un Dio d’amore, la presenza del male sulla terra è giustificato. In altri termini, Dio interagisce con noi?
Sembrerebbe di sì, altrimenti che senso avrebbero preghiere e miracoli?

La risposta divine alle nostre preghiere è parsimoniosa; ecco perché…

Una ragione per l’intervento divino nella storia: fornire una rilevazione più completa.
Dio guarda l’uomo, lo vede più debole di quanto credeva e lo aiuta.
Cio’ comporta un Dio diverso rispetto a quello della scolastica, un Dio che vede la sua onniscienza limitata dalla libertà umana; in altre parole, la libertà radicale dell’uomo sorprende Dio che modifica i suoi piani.
Questo genere di intervento riguarda un po’ tutte le religioni monoteiste.

ma la lettura completa richiede molti saperi e molte culture che non possono stare in una testala lettura della Bibbia non puo’ che essere comunitaria e questa comunità si chiama Chiesa di Dio. Il significato “emerge” in una dialettica, non viene registrato in seguito ad una normale lettura.
In questo senso nemmeno l’autore materiale della Bibbia sa cio’ che scrive, inutile interpellarlo…

… I suggest that it is plausible to suppose that… God inspired the writing of the Bible, to convey both the very limited message comprehensible at the time a passage was written and the deeper message comprehensible later… These principles of biblical interpretation allowed the Fathers to interpret quite a lot of the Bible without needing to know the genre of the biblical book… if we are to follow Church tradition in using the Bible as the authoritative source of doctrine, we must also follow Church tradition in the method by which we interpret it
L’elemento vivo prevale su quello libresco, è anche il motivo per cui il sapere scientifico deve prevalere e informare la lettura dei testi.
La visione dei protestanti si oppone a questa tradizione: per loro la Bibbia dirime le questioni, è tribunale di ultima istanza e la lettura solitaria viene praticata e consigliata.
