Farei piuttosto un’altra osservazione: la credenza religiosa non è unica, ce ne sono tante. Anche la stessa credenza religiosa può essere vissuta in modi diversi: formalmente, l’assidua vecchina con la terza elementare sempre presente in Chiesa in prima fila e Alvin Plantinga credono nello stesso Dio. Diciamo che gli “dei” sono molti e la gran parte di loro è decisamente naif. Tra i credenti i "semplici" sono sovra-rappresentati, in questo modo gli studi appena visti si spiegano facilmente. Anzi, mi sarei aspettato una differenziale ancor pèiù marcato.

Sbrigare velocemente una faccenda – nella quale ci si dimostra competenti - significa non appassionarsi troppo ad essa, non attribuirle troppa importanza.
Diciamo che i credenti prediligono soluzioni più semplici (rischiando il semplicismo), gli atei soluzioni complicate (rischiando l'astrusità). Questo a prescindere dalle loro capacità cognitive e dalla correttezza della soluzione fornita.
Sia il credente che l'ateo di pari abilità prendono rischi, ma in questo senso hanno preferenze diverse: il credente preferisce rischiare di presentarsi come ingenuo, l'ateo come virtuoso difensore di cause perse.
Tra chi è più propenso all'ingenuità e chi è attirato dalle cause perse, è il secondo a mostrarsi più “innamorato” della razionalità (fino a sconfinare nel sofistico).
Ammettiamo che davanti ad un problema io abbia due scopi: 1) trovare la soluzione e 2) mostrare la mia potenza cognitiva. Tenderò a sbagliare per eccesso di astrusità. Ammettiamo invece che il mio duplice obbiettivo davanti ad un acrostico sia differente: 1) trovare la soluzione 2) togliermelo dai piedi il più presto possibile. Tenderò a sbagliare per semplicismo. Questo postulando che sia il primo che il secondo candidato diano lo stesso numenro di risposte esatte.

Un’ ultima considerazione sociologica: le battaglie culturali, di solito, sono combattute da un 20% della popolazione, quella mediamente più istruita e intelligente. L’ 80% della popolazione è gregge conformista. Ammettiamo che l’élite (20%) si divida in due partiti: atei (10%) e religiosi (10%). Al momento – supponiamo - i religiosi prevalgono, per cui la popolazione è prevalentemente religiosa (90%). E’ chiaro che in questa fase l’ intelligenza media del partito religioso – annacquata dai “conformisti” - è inferiore a quella del partito ateo. Ammettiamo infine che fenomeni epocali (secolarizzazione) spostino lentamente gli equilibri con una trasmigrazione dei conformisti da un partito all’altro: si invertirebbe anche lo squilibrio tra intelligenze medie. A questo punto una domanda pertinente è: a che punto siamo con la secolarizzazione?

In sintesi: 1) nello spettro delle soluzioni religiose quelle semplici sono sovrarappresentate, 2) lo stile cognitivo  di una persona la attrae verso soluzioni più o meno complesse, 3) con chi stanno i conformisti al punto in cui siamo nei processi di secolarizzazione?
I tre punti spiegano forse la natura del nesso tra razionalità e fede, così come viene registrato dagli studiosi.

Questi studi lasciano sempre un dubbio: la credenza religiosa si porta sempre dietro un'intera cultura, un coacervo di fattori descrivibile solo con mille variabili. In questo senso la procedura random trial può non essere sufficiente a "ripulire" il campo dalle possibili interferenze.
Questo è tanto più vero quando il confronto è tra paesi anziché tra singoli. C'è chi vede una maggiore propensione all’ateismo per le nazioni caratterizzate da una migliore educazione e da un IQ medio più elevato.
Tuttavia, i fattori in gioco sono molti. Una nazione ricca, ad esempio, può dedicare maggiori risorse all’istruzione, venendo dunque caratterizzata da una cultura e da un QI medio più elevati. Allo stesso tempo la maggiore ricchezza può ottenere l’effetto di una minore religiosità.

... l’ateismo è correlato a fattori come l’avere un trascorso di dominio comunista, il maggiore reddito procapite, la libertà religiosa (di per sé positiva ma si pensi alle molte nazioni islamiche dove la religiosità è garantita e quasi imposta dallo stato), all’istruzione superiore (che può predisporre a un maggiore materialismo). Ma l’ateismo non risulta direttamente correlato in maniera significativa al QI medio...
Inoltre, ci sono studi -   Manuale di religione e salute (Oxford University Press, 2012) - che segnalano un nesso tra credo religioso e rendimento scolastico. In casi del genere, però, il ruolo dell’intelligenza potrebbe essere secondario.

I credenti americani con una fede più intensa sono anche i più istruiti

Questo a prescindere dal fatto che gli atei siano mediamente più istruiti dei credenti.
