Uno potrebbe dire: “mi sembra ovvio che il tempo non debba incidere sulle scelte etiche”. Purtroppo, non è affatto un’ovvietà. Ti faccio allora un caso dove il problema si pone in modo potente: preferisci usare una somma di denaro in tuo possesso per salvare una vita umana oggi o metterla in banca, farla fruttare e salvare due vite tra cinque anni?

L’uomo primitivo era circondato da pericoli, per questo il suo cervello era tarato sul “qui ed ora”: per lui non c’era domani. E’ un pregio che per noi è diventato difetto. Un difetto che ci fa ingrassare, drogare, giocare al casino, andare a prostitute… e anche prendere scelte morali sbagliate.

Lo spirito del PIL
Puo’ esistere un’etica laica?
No, qui non intendo affrontare discorsi metafisici, meta-etici o che riguardino il problema del “fondamento”. Non intendo nemmeno pignolare su questa o su quella sfumatura. Mi pongo la domanda come se la porrebbe un uomo della strada: puo’ esistere un solido bene post-cristiano?
Tanto per anticipare la conclusione: sono abbastanza ottimista, penso che un’etica laica possa esistere e debba essere incentrata sulla ricchezzamateriale. Di seguito spiego meglio le motivazioni.

Una palla di neve che rotola vale mille palle di neve: ben presto sarà più grande di tutte le altre messe insieme.
La stessa logica vale per i valori: nel dubbio meglio promuovere quelli destinati a germogliare rispetto a quelli statici. Meglio la vita delle pietre, anche se sono preziose.
Non è un caso se il cattolicesimo adora lo Spirito Santo, ovvero quella forza destinata a moltiplicare e diffondere l’azione benefica dei doni.
Esiste un succedaneo laico dello Spirito Santo? Secondo quanto scrive Tyler Cowen in “Wealth makes the world go round” sì, è la CRESCITA ECONOMICA.
Ma il PIL è spesso criticato a ragione: non tiene conto dell’ambiente, del tempo libero, dei doni e di altre cose. Si puo’ sempre correggerlo trasformandolo in PIL-plus. Il PIL-plus valorizza anche tempo libero, produzione domestica e ambiente, tra le altre cose.
Il PIL-plus è un buon candidato per fungere da architrave dell’etica laica? Max PIL-plus puo’ rappresentare il bene? Secondo me sì e qui di seguito dico perché.
Innanzitutto, Max PIL-plus è un fattore di stabilità, il che non è poco. Dopo l’Impero Romano, la durata media delle civiltà umane sta diminuendo, da 406 anni a 302. Chi oggi vive un senso di declino deve sapere che questa condizione è abituale nella storia umana. Le civiltà collassano continuamente per le ragioni più disparate: debolezza militare, disastro ecologico, carestia, tirannia e disastri naturali, eccetera. Arricchirsi aiuta a sopravvivere: in linea di principio la vita del nobile selvaggio era migliore rispetto a quella che proponeva il tiranno accentratore che lo sottomise, ma nessuna società povera, per quanto virtuosa, può da sola conservare la propria autonomia sul lungo periodo.
Fortunatamente, le società più tolleranti tendono oggi ad essere sia piùricche che le più tecnologicamente avanzate. In questo senso max-PIL-plus è un affarone. Una società militarizzata, invece, oggi è destinata al collasso sicuro.
Max-PIL ha molti aspetti positivi immediatamente percepibili da tutti: allevia la miseria, amplia le opportunità e allunga le vite. Le società più ricche hanno standard di vita migliori, medicine migliori e maggiore autonomia personale, offrono migliori soddisfazioni e hanno più fonti di divertimento.
Forse non ci rendiamo ben conto di come la nostra vita sia migliorata rispetto a un secolo fa. Ci sono indicatori di benessere che parlano chiaro: occupanti per stanza, persone per camera da letto, acqua corrente, frigo, gas, energia elettrica, telefoni, radio, TV, diplomi, lauree, infortuni sul lavoro, ore di lavoro, polio, tubercolosi, tifo, antibiotici, vaccini, mortalità infantile, dieta alimentare, speranza di vita, tempo libero. A chi volesse saperne di più consiglio la lettura di “Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress”, l’ultima fatica di Steven Pinker.
E le diseguaglianze? Faccio solo notare che il mio smartphone non è fondamentalmente diverso da quello di Bill Gates, nonostante i redditi spazialmente diversi. Questo vale per gran parte dei beni oggi sul mercato.
Il PIL sgocciola inevitabilmente verso il basso. E il PIL-plus ancora di più. Quando qualcosa è stata scoperta con grande sforzo per essere destinata ad un’élite, poi, dopo un certo lag temporale, viene messo a disposizione della massa. Possiamo discutere sulla dirata del lag ma non sulla dinamica.
Pensiamo alla categoria di persone maggiormente beneficiata dalle società prospere: gli immigrati. Ora è chiaro perché gli ultimi sono i più favoriti da max-PIL-plus? I migranti, poi, spesso torneranno nei loro paesi d’origine portando nuove competenze e nuove connessioni commerciali. Solo due esempi: India e Israele hanno sviluppato interessanti scenari tecnologici e softwaristici grazie ai loro stretti legami con la scena statunitense.
Altra ricaduta: nuove medicine e tecnologie sviluppate in nazioni ricche si fanno strada anche nel resto del mondo. Anche in questo caso la vicinanza al benessere ci beneficia indirettamente. Lo “sgocciolamento” è la regola.
Ma che dire della recente diseguaglianza all’interno delle nazioni? Sembra crescere, è vero, ma probabilmente è solo un contraccolpo al crollo delle diseguaglianze globali.
Se allarghiamo lo sguardo la nostra epoca è speciale: povertà e diseguaglianza hanno subito un durissimo colpo, dobbiamo rallegrarcene.
La crescita economica ha aiutato i poveri ma noi ci interessiamo unicamente delle difficoltà della classe media alle nostre latitudini, ovvero a un gruppo di persone che appartiene al 2% più ricco del pianeta. Mi chiedo se sia giusto?
La verità è che la crescita economica è l’unica via affidabile per uscire dallo squallore. E stiamo attenti ai numerini: uno scarto di crescita dell’ 1% sembra poco ma sul medio-lungo fa la differenza. Se nell’ultimo secolo fossimo cresciuti dell’ 1% in meno ogni hanno, oggi vivremmo come negli anni cinquanta. Le serie esponenziali ingannano. Il Nobel Bob Lucas: “Quando si prendono decisioni per il futuro, se uno pensa a queste cose è difficile poi pensare a qualcos’altro”.
Altro portato del denaro: maggiore accesso alle arti, alla cultura e all’istruzione.
Ancora: la ricchezza minimizza la possibilità che il tuo destino sia determinato dal momento e dal luogo in cui sei nati. Mai come oggi la gente viaggia e si sposta. Chiediamoci solo questo: c’è mai stato un momento nella storia umana in cui così tanti individui hanno una così alta possibilità di diventare scienziati di livello mondiale?
La ricchezza ci rende più buoni, e qui non si puo’ non pensare a Benjamin Friedman e al suo libro “The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth”.Magari sono virtù di facciata ma sempre meglio che niente.
Veniamo alle dolenti note: la ricchezza ci rende felici?
Recenti ricerche rispondono in senso affermativo, e qui spendo i nomi diBetsey Stevenson e Justin Wolfers, gli autori dello studio più completo sul tema. La loro conclusione tiene sia all’interno della nazione che nel confronto tra nazioni. Inoltre, sembra anche che non ci sia una soglia superata la quale l’effetto-felicità cessi. Il Nobel Angus Deaton giunge alle medesime conclusioni.
Tuttavia, è giusto dire che in passato parecchi autori hanno negato il legame, perlomeno sopra una certa soglia e all’interno della nazione. Il cosiddetto parsdosso di Easterline viene dato per scontato.
Gli studi sulla felicità non sono mai molto affidabili poiché fondati suquestionari e scale difficili da rendere oggettive. Forse certi parsdossi ci dicono di più sulla natura del linguaggio che sulla natura della felicità. Mi spiego meglio, se chiedete alla gente del Kenya come giudicano la loro salute e la loro sanità otterrete un alto tasso di soddisfazione dichiarata, almeno pari a quello espresso da un italiano o da un canadese. Ma forse i keniani hanno ricalibrato il linguaggio sulla loro esperiemzs concreta di tutti i giorni. In altri termini, l’espressione “sono felice” viene impiegata dai keniani per indicare il meglio che possono attendersi, sarebbe inutile riservarla per qualcosa di impossibile che mai si realizzerà. Ebbene, se le cose stessero in questi termini i questionari sottovaluterebbero la felicità resle dei ricchi, ovvero di coloro per cui sono possibili molte più cose. I ricchi sviluppano standard più elevati per quanto riguarda la loro felicità, al punto che per loro questo termine significa qualcosa di diverso. Sebbene l’invidia sia una componente importante probabilmente non neutralizza tutti i miglioramenti che la prosperità ci garantisce.
Ci sono poi osservazioni dirette che fanno propendere per un legame senza soglia tra soldi e felicità: molte persone si impegnano per guadagnareredditi sempre più alti. Forse sono tutti stupidi ma forse no, forse sanno che il denaro aiuta a stare meglio. Anche perché le persone non sono sempre auto-centrate, desiderano anche la felicità per le loro famiglie e i loro discendenti.
Altra evidenza: i flussi migratori. A fronte di qualche fricchettone che esasperato dai ritmi moderni se ne va verso i paesi poveri (ma più “spirotuali”) masse di persone normali prendono convinte la direzione opposta.
Conclusione: meglio invidiare la Mercedes del vicino potendo comunque disporre di un’ottima Volkswagen che invidiare il suo cavallo dovendo andare a piedi.
Ma l’asso nella manica delle società ricche è un altro: la moltitudine dinicchie in cui ciascuno puo’ trovare la sua realizzazione: c’è chi si realizza nella fotografia e chi tifando una squadra di calcio; chi suona uno strumento e chi anima un circolo culturale.. Il concetto di felicità è ambiguo, alcune persone possono cercare stimoli temporanei mentre altri potrebbero voler sentirsi realizzati alla fine della loro vita, altri ancora cercano la felicità nella competizione. Le società più ricche offrono maggiori opportunità e quindi appagano una gamma di gusti differenti mentre i questionari inadeguati si concentrano solo su un solo tipo di felicità.
Nel paese dell’abbondanza possiamo sperimentare variegate gioie passeggere, nonché godere di una moltitudine di stimoli. Più nuovi gadget, più vetrine, più video divertenti, più serie TV e più incontri fortuiti con persone interessanti. Sarà superficiale ma anche questo spiega la maggior soddisfazione di chi abita questi posti.
La ricchezza ci risparmia quelle catastrofi che conducono ad una miseria indiretta. Quando muore un bambino ci sentiamo tutti più tristi, e anche se l’abitudine ci tempra all’insensibilità non saprei dire fino a che punto questo sia un bene, quand’anche la cosa si rifletta in modo positivo nei punteggi dei questionari.
Guerre, rivoluzioni, collasso dell’ordine civile. Si tratta di eventi auspicabili? Chiedo a chi si fa scudo dietro il mancato nesso tra soldi e felicità. Ebbene, queste sciagure ci sono risparmiate spesso proprio da quel benessere materiale che non vogliamo pregiudicare. Io direi che è bene che sia così, anche se la cosa forse non si riflette nel questionario della felicità.
La ricchezza è anche un cuscinetto contro la disgrazia più nera mentre spesso i questionari riguardano la vita quotidiana. Esempio: la nostra speranza di vita è aumentata considerevolmente ma chi ne tiene conto quando risponde alla domanda “sei felice?”. Nessuno, eppure nessuno oserebbe negare quanto questa conquista sia preziosa.
C’è un altro problema che i soldi affrontano e spesso risolvono: il disaccordotra le persone. Rivendichi un diritto che gli altri non ti riconoscono: compralo! Alla fine potrai esercitarlo nel consenso generale. Faccio un esempio che più spinoso non si puo’: l’utero in affitto. Leviamo di mezzo la questione dei diritti del bambino e concentriamoci su quelli della donna che partorisce per conto terzi. Per quanto la si possa vedere come “sfruttata” bisogna ammettere che la presenza di un chiaro consenso con tanto di firma indebolisce la sua posizione qualora rivendichi successivamente dei diritti che di fatto ha venduto a suo tempo.
E’ importante notare come la prospettiva di lungo periodo consenta di superare alcune obiezioni ricorrenti: le preferenze espresse nel mercato spesso appaiono irrazionali, intransitive, dispettose o quantomeno moralmente discutibili, come dimostrato da un’ampia gamma di vizi che sul mercato trovano soddisfazione e che vanno dalle bevande zuccherate alla alla pornografia. In altri termini, un cheeseburger al fast food non vale in realtà 4 euro, considerando il suo potenziale impatto sulla mia salute futura. Eppure, allo stesso tempo, vivere in una società molto ricca – per quanto ricca anche di fast food – resta comunque cosa buona, incluso per la mia salute: la speranza di vita è funzione del reddito. E’ proprio sul lungo periodo che questi vantaggi diventano più evidenti. Quindi, se diamo un giudizio a tutto campo, troveremo che per molte scelte di fondo la bussola della crescita indica una direzione conforme al senso etico comune.
Certo, la crescita non puo’ essere tutto, altrimenti scadremmo nell’utilitarismo. Esistono diritti negativi intangibili che siamo tenuti ad osservare, praticamente tutti credono in diritti di qualche tipo, varie forme di omicidio, tortura e abuso non possono essere tollerate. Di certo non trovano spazi di eugenetica coercitiva. Max-PIL-plus ci consente però di non menzionare i diritti positivi poiché questi vengono ricompresi solo se conformi al principio base.
