OGGETTO E NATURA
Giovanni e Giuseppe sono due anti-relativisti, pensano che esista una morale assoluta, una bellezza assoluta, e magari anche una verità assoluta. ma non pensano questa cosa esattamente nella stessa maniera. Seguono esempi.
Giovanni pensa che uccidere un innocente sia oggettivamente sbagliato.
Giuseppe pensa che uccidere un innocente non sia conforme alla natura umana.
Giovanni pensa che i quartetti d’archi di Beethoven siano oggettivamente belli.
Giuseppe pensa che i quartetti d’archi di Beethoven siano in armonia con la natura umana.
Giovanni e Giuseppe hanno un nemico comune (il relativismo) ma anche tra loro, come abbiamo visto, ci sono delle differenze. Per Giovanni la giustizia e la bellezza sono proprietà di un oggetto (o di un evento) che sta fuori e noi riconosciamo, per Giuseppe invece sono qualcosa che si costruisce dentro di noi. Giovanni mette al centro le cose, Giovanni l’uomo. Per Giovanni giustizia e bellezza esistono a prescindere dall’esistenza dell’uomo, per Giuseppe no. Per Giovanni le cascate del Niagara sono belle anche se non ci fossero uomini ad ammirarle, cosa che Giuseppe negherebbe senza esitare.
Voi con chi state? Proviamo a vedere cosa dice la scienza, ormai il tribunale ultimo per tutte le questioni.
Lo scienziato che fa il filosofo tende ad assecondare Giovanni, questa figura (Monod?) ha una vera fobia per il “soggetto” e appena puo’ lo esclude dal suo schema.
Ma lo scienziato che fa lo scienziato tende invece ad assecondare Giuseppe: se l’uomo trova bella una tela blu di Yves Klein, lui sa che un’ape nemmeno lo vede quel blu (lo vede rosso e non si puo’ certo dire che si sbaglii). Il colore, senza un soggetto che lo crei in sé nemmeno è colore ma giusto una lunghezza d’onda, difficile pensare allora che la bellezza esista oggettivamente. Allo stesso modo, un leone che uccide una gazzella, uccide un innocente ma nessuno lo colpevolizza, anche se avesse delle alternative: è la sua natura! Compie quindi un atto (uccidere l’innocente) che non è oggettivamente malvagio.
Conclusione: l’appello alla natura è un’ottima strategia per combattere in modo coerente il relativismo, non lasciamoci confondere dagli abusi compiuti in suo nome nel corso della storia.
E adesso l'ultima domanda, quella a cui è più ostico rispondere: in questo articolo si realizza uno degli abusi di cui sopra?

PERCHE’ I PROFESSORI PIU’ BELLI SONO ANCHE I MIGLIORI?
Quando sono gli studenti a dare i voti ai prof. vincono regolarmente i più belli. Per molti questa è un’evidenza di inaffidabilità. E’ vero invece il contrario, la maggiore qualità dei “belli” – almeno nella classe docente - è proprio cio’ che ci dobbiamo aspettare: ci sono molti mestieri che valorizzano la bellezza, le persone che, pur avendo un aspetto gradevole, vi rinunciano in favore dell’insegnamento hanno, evidentemente, una particolare passione per quello che fanno.

I valori estetici sono oggettivi? SAGGIO
I valori estetici sono oggettivi?
Confrontando Bach e certi insulsi cantanti pop non sembra esistano dubbi ma poi, quando si va a fondo, cominciano ad emergere e presto ci si impantana. Qui faccio un tentativo di uscire dalle sabbie mobili. Non è facile perché bisogna farsi innanzitutto un’idea di cosa siano l’arte e la bellezza: hai detto poco!
Poniamo che, dopo aver sempre vissuto in isolamento stile Kaspar Hauser, vogliate sapere cos’è un corvo e, per il prestigio di cui gode, vi rivolgete alla “scienza” che vi fornisce una descrizione minuta dell’oggetto di vostro interesse. Domanda: dopo aver assimilato la lezione della scienza potrete forse dire di sapere tutto del corvo?
No, non saprete nemmeno, per esempio, che un corvo è nero!
Perché? Perché non sapete cosa sia la “nerezza” di un corvo, la scienza non ve l’ha spigato: la “nerezza” si vede, non si descrive scientificamente. La “nerezza” ha bisogno di vita, non di scuola. Lo scienziato, al limite, avrà parlato di lunghezze d’onda e di frequenze emanate dalle penne del corvo ma voi non vi sarete fatti alcuna idea della “nerezza” poiché tra il colore nero e le frequenze d’onda c’è un abisso (“fossato galileiano”). A questo punto vi rivolgerete allo psicologo il quale vi consiglierà, per completare la vostra conoscenza del corvo, di guardarne uno direttamente.
In genere si dice che il corvo di cui parla la scienza è un oggetto primario mentre il suo colore (la “nerezza”) è un oggetto secondario percepito direttamente dalla mente. “Direttamente” significa che non è “rappresentabile”, per questo la scienza non ne parla. Ma come possono convivere due oggetti (primario e secondario) in un unico oggetto? Avete presente quei disegnini in cui sembra sia rappresentato un certo soggetto ma poi a guardar bene ne è rappresentato anche un altro? Avete presente i quadri dell’Arcimboldo? Ecco, la cosa puo’ aiutare per comprendere come nello stesso oggetto ne possano convivere almeno due.
Ora che avete afferrato anche le qualità secondarie del corvo potete dire di averne una conoscenza completa? No, un corvo puo’ essere anche bello, puo’ essere un oggetto estetico, puo’ essere cioè unoggetto terziario. In altri termini, nello stesso oggetto ne possono convivere non die ma addirittura tre!
Anche nel caso degli oggetti terziari non basta la descrizione per farsene un’idea, occorre un’esperienza ben precisa, occorre un accesso diretto: io posso anche parlare di corvi e di grano, posso anche farveli vedere nel dettaglio in modo tale che vi rendiate conto anche del loro colore ma per farvi capire quanto possano essere “belli” occorre che voi facciate un’esperienza particolare, per esempio mettendovi di fronte a un quadro di Van Gogh. Van Gogh non è interessato agli oggetti primari e secondari ma solo ai terziari, si concentra su quelli facendoveli percepire. Posso mettervi davanti tutti i corvi del mondo ma senza sperimentare un’opera d’arte difficilmente ne sperimenterete mai la bellezza.
Ricapitolando: la scienza si occupa di oggetti primari, la psicologia di oggetti secondari e l’estetica di oggetti terziari. Esempio: certe onde sonore (fisica) a contatto con il nostro orecchio generano dei suoni (psicologia) che generano la musica (estetica).
Ora sappiamo che la bellezza è la proprietà di un oggetto (terziario) ma per concludere se sia o meno “oggettiva” occorre andare ben oltre. Occorre definirla meglio, per esempio. Qui avanzo l’ipotesi che più mi ha convinto: la bellezza è l’oggetto terziario che emerge in un’esperienza artistica e che coincide con altri oggetti terziari emersi nel corso della mia esperienza di vita. L’arte, infatti, non ha l’esclusiva degli oggetti terziari: non è necessario essere in un museo con grandi capolavori per sperimentare qualcosa di simile alla bellezza, il nostro mondo emotivo, per esempio, ce la offre tutti i giorni: in un sogno, in una persona, in una gita, in un incontro, in un gioco…
Se questa definizione di bellezza funziona possiamo dire che la sua percezione implica sempre un’identificazione: la bellezza di un’opera mi emoziona poiché mi richiama alle mie esperienze di vita più profonde.
Ma tornando alla nostra domanda di partenza un’ osservazione s’impone: poiché nella vita ciascuno fa esperienze differenti, nell’arte ciascuno troverà la bellezza in posti differenti. E siamo così in pienorelativismo estetico.
Per poter dire che esistono dei valori estetici oggettivi occorre allora che esista la “vita buona”ovvero una vita (oggettivamente) ideale che ci faccia percepire i “giusti” oggetti terziari in modo da poter isolare la bellezza oggettiva: chi conosce il bene, conoscerà meglio il bello. Qui capiamo meglio come relativismo etico e relativismo estetico viaggino quasi sempre in coppia.
Nessuno vive una “vita buona” integrale ma tutti noi, spero, ne abbiamo vissuto dei frammenti: anche il criminale che si pente, nel momento del pentimento, vive un frammento di “vita buona”. In questo senso l’accesso alla bellezza non è negato a nessuno.
Ma una persona malvagia puo’ produrre bellezza? Sotto il nazismo è stata creata bellezza? Come giudicare l’opera di Leni Riefenstahl? Qui le cose si complicano .

Mito beauty premium
Contrordine: i belli non guadagnano meglio, il premio bellezza non esiste, almeno quando si fa la tara con intelligenza, carattere e salute. Sorprende poi la performance dei "molto brutti", decisamente superiore a quello dei "brutti".
Gli studi precedenti che giungono a conclusioni diverse probabilmente non considerano i "bruttissimi", oppure sottovalutano il collegamento tra bellezza, salute, intelligenza e carattere.

Per molti L’arte d’avanguardia è un bluff.
Di fronte a certe opere reprimiamo a fatica l’urlo“ma lo sa fare anche mia figlia!”.
Lo spettro che regolarmente aleggia è quello dellafiaba “I vestiti dell’imperatore”. Oppure quello di Fantozzi al cineforum.
Eppure noi facciamo resistenza a questo sentimento così spontaneo. Perché?
Perché chi lo manifesta è ignorante.
O è un bambino che non conta o è un adulto ignorante, e noi non vogliamo essere assimilati agli ignoranti.
In alcuni casi è un esperto di arte tradizionale ma ignorante in arte d’avanguardia, il che è ancora peggio: oltre a essere ignorante è in conflitto di interessi (chi sa molto di una materia ha un chiaro interesse a ritenere importante quella materia e solo quella).
Sia come sia noi ci freniamo.
Eppure, quando vado in visita a Villa Panza di Varese frenarsi è particolarmente duro, il dubbio che l’avanguardia sia un bluff fa capolino dietro ogni “opera”.
Certo, un motivo d’interesse poi lo scopri sempre, ma lo scopriresti anche dietro un sasso del tuo giardino. Piace ai bambini! Ma loro starebbero giorni ad ammirare anche una lucertola qualsiasi.
Pensandoci bene non puo’ essere un bluff! Un bluff non dura un secolo! Duchamp ha rotto con la pittura e fondato l’avanguardia nel 1913, e da allora…
Ripeto: un bluff non puo’ durare un secolo!
Oppure sì.
Forse la nostra mente ha delle falle ormai assodateche consentono scherzetti “secolari”.
La presenza di queste falle sono il miglior argomento nelle mani dei conservatori per denunciare il bluff dell’avanguardia.
Errore dell’aspettativa
Noi tendiamo a vedere quel che ci “attendiamo” di vedere. Se vado in un museo e mi aspetto di vedere cose belle, probabilmente “vedrò” cose belle, qualsiasi cosa mi si pari davanti.
Errore della spiegazione
Per la nostra mente tutto deve essere spiegabile, per lei il caso non esiste. Se certa arte è riconosciuta ci sarà dunque una spiegazione, e la più semplice rimane quella per cui ha un valore reale.
Errore della pecora
Nel dubbio ci uniamo al gregge. Se tutti rispettano certa arte, io, nel dubbio, mi aggrego.
Errore del “vanto”
Tendiamo ad innalzare il nostro prestigio. Se è figo manifestare confidenza e familiarità con l’arte d’avanguardia, noi lo faremo. Ma soprattutto eviteremo di censurarla quando farlo segnala solo ignoranza.

Con questi bachi nella mente un’idea sbagliata puo’campare per secoli. Sospinta da questi venti la barchetta dell’avanguardia non si ferma più.
Anche perché si tratta di errori che si autoalimentano: il conformista aumenta la numerosità del gregge, che a sua volta aumenta il suo potere attrattivo.
Chi è soddisfatto della sua visita al museo prestigioso aumenta il numero di spettatori soddisfatti, il che dà ulteriore prestigio al museo.
Chi riconosce il valore di certa arte per il fatto che è già riconosciuto da altri, aumenta il riconoscimento di quell’opera spianando la strada al prossimo.
Se ci si sente ignoranti censurando certa arte, lasceremo che a farlo siano i veri ignoranti, il che alimenta il tabù della censura.
E’ una valanga.
Questo spiegherebbe il duraturo bluff dell’avanguardia. Ma cosa spiega l’inizio?
Boh. Ma attenzione a non cadere nell’errore della spiegazione: per avere un inizio basta e avanza il puro caso.

La trappola della bellezza
Estate, afa, bonaccia, voglia di andarsene.
Il viaggiatore è protagonista assoluto della stagione e i due viaggiatori per antonomasia sono il migrante e il turista: il primo si affida a barconi e ONG, il secondo ad aeroporti e agenzie.
Migranti straccione e turisti modaioli, due viaggiatori completamente diversi.
Eppure qualcosa li unisce, perlomeno quando pensano alla bellezza. Ascoltiamoli.

“Com’era bella la mia valle” (altro che questo squallore dove sono capitato), sospira quasi subito il migrante nostalgico.
“Che posti meravigliosi ho visto” (altro che questa mediocrità che mi tocca), pensa e dice a tutti trasognato il turista di ritorno.
Eppure il migrante scarta risoluto l’ipotesi di tornare tra le “bellezze” in cui si culla, così come il turista non prende nemmeno in considerazione un trasloco nel “paese delle meraviglie” che occupa i suoi sogni.
Perché? Scoprirlo ci dice qualcosa sulla “trappola della bellezza”.
Propongo allora tre ragioni:
- Perché il “visibile” batte l’ “invisibile” e noi di primo acchito tendiamo a privilegiarlo. La bellezza appartiene al regno delle apparenze, non sorprende quindi l’incoerenza di chi “vanta ma non compra”. In questo ambito parole e fatti divergono.
- Perché esiste il cosiddetto “‘adattamento edonico”: alcune felicità sono fugaci, e quelle che regala la bellezza – dicono gli psicologi – lo sono in modo sorprendente. Chi ha un bel quadro in casa – tanto per dire – cessa di vederlo dopo pochi giorni, ma anche chi vive in una bella casa è presto indifferente a questo privilegio. I bambini che giocano in discarica sono felici quasi quanto quelli che pernottano una settimana a Disneyland.
- Perché vantare un contatto con la bellezza innalza il nostro prestigio sociale per cui l’ostentazione in questo campo ci porta vantaggi a prescindere dalla sua fondatezza.
